One in five Mecklenburg county children live in food insecure homes. Many of these children rely heavily on school provided meals. During school breaks, such as weekends and holidays, many go home to little to no food. To help with child hunger, Financial Independence Group decided to sponsor 15 children through the Backpack Buddies Program.
The Backpack Buddies Program provides weekend and holiday meal packs to local school students who rely heavily on school meals. Each pack includes enough meals, snacks, fruits, veggies and drinks to last the weekend or holiday break. These packs are distributed discreetly to the students who have been identified by school counselors, teachers and other school staff.
We found it really tough to guarantee that these children received enough food in our holiday pack to last them through the two week break. Thankfully, our local Subway and Tenders restaurant donated gift cards and food vouchers to help with this. FIG also raised enough funds from internal staff to include a $50 gift card to Target and other special gift items in this pack.
This program lasts the entire school year, 35 weeks. Our staff continuously makes food and monetary donations to our food pantry. We have also started keeping a Wal-Mart wish list for those that like to shop from the comfort of their own desk. Our most needed food items are on this list.
